CUG’s First Labor-Day Activity for Graduate Students

CUG News (Correspondent You Meng and Liu Guanlan) Upon the new semester, Graduate School and Office of Graduate Affairs initiated a labor-day activity for graduate students in CUG to develop their readiness for hard work and perseverance. In the context of routine epidemic prevention, more than 5,000 graduate students took active actions for a thorough cleaning and disinfection in their dormitories, study and activity rooms and laboratories.

All schools made full preparations and formulated safe and practical plans. The School of Earth Sciences took supervisor teams as basic units. Some supervisors and teachers took the lead to clean study rooms together with students. They also sorted out and disposed of reagents and waste in labs.

School of Automation, Gemological Institute and School of Arts and Communication fully mobilized their graduate students to dust laboratory instruments, and meanwhile to identify and remove potential risks in the study and research places.

Initiated by Graduate Unions from School of Environmental Studies, School of Public Administration, School of Foreign Languages, School of Sports Science and Physical Education, etc., students cleaned and disinfected their living and studying areas. They worked together to create a neat, bright, warm and safe environment for living, studying and working. Graduate leaders and Party members actively participated in the cleaning and fully played exemplary roles.

Xu Xiaowei, a graduate student from the Class of 2020, School of Earth Sciences, said: “After the class president gathered us together, we began to sweep and mop the floor, wipe the table, tidy up and throw away rubbish. It is rewarding, for dormitories are brighter, the study rooms are tidier. We feel happier with a sense of achievement, and we’re infused more energy in study and research.”

Gu Yixiao, a graduate student from the Class of 2020, School of Engineering, shared his feeling: “To do a simple thing well itself is remarkable; to do an ordinary thing well is extraordinary, and this is what labor inspires us.”

Chen Lu, a houseparent of Graduate Dormitory Building 8, said: “Students have not only gained practical labor experience, but also experienced cleaners’ hard work. Cleaners and students work well together to clear and sort out rubbish, which makes us feel it worthwhile for everything that we have done for our students.”

Chen Wenling, associate professor from School of Environmental Studies, said: “This activity has shown that everyone is full of expectation and enthusiasm for this new semester. We can see their solidarity and love. A friendly and supportive research group in a tidy study environment is the prerequisite for students to make progress.

Vice President Lai Xulong addressed that it is very meaningful for graduate students to participate in labor activities in the epidemic response. It is expected that all schools and supervisors take active actions to enrich activities in labor, sports and aesthetic education to guide graduate students to develop comprehensively and strive for success.

It is said that this activity is an effective attempt of labor education for graduate students, and Office of Graduate Affairs will take this opportunity to continuously innovate the form of labor education, expand the scope of labor services, establish a long-term working mechanism, create a campus cultural atmosphere of “respecting and honoring working people”, and educate and guide students to love labor and life so as to promote their comprehensive development of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and labor. At the same time, each school is to encouraged to carry out “labor education for specific purposeand establish labor education bases and social practice bases by combining the characteristics of disciplines and majors.
