Teaching Inspection to Graduate Students’ Classes in New Semester

CUG News (Correspondent Cao Zhe, Lin Xiaoyan) The graduate students began their fall semester on September 13. In order to ensure the teaching quality in the new semester, all school deans led teams to listen to classes in the first week and talked to the students to acquire the teaching trends as well as the hot topics and difficulties in graduate teaching.

Leaders and faculties from different schools and departments went to both the Nanwangshan School District and Weilaicheng School District, listening to 30 classes in total.

On the afternoon of September 14, Huang Xiaomei, Secretary of the Party committee of CUG, listened to the class of “Research on the Theory and Practice of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics” taught by Mr Yi Youqun from School of Marxism. Huang Xiaomei spoke highly of Mr. Yi Youqun's class and communicated with him on how to forge high-quality classes of ideological and political theory. Huang Xiaomei pointed out that the purpose of teaching ideological and political theory is to help the graduate students establish a right outlook on the world, on life and on values, master scientific research methods, and broaden their international horizons. The courses will not only meet the professional requirements for high-caliber, precise and cutting-edge scientific research, but will also be oriented towards training students with “high-quality, confidence and long-term vision”.

On the morning of September 22, Wang Yanxin, president of CUG, listened to the class of “Management Models and Methods” given by Mr. Wang Guangmin from School of Economics and Management. After class, Professor Wang Yanxin talked about teaching experience with Mr. Wang Guangmin. He proposed that “Management Models and Methods” is an essential course for graduate education of humanities and social sciences. As a multi-method quantitative course with wide scope, it involves major data analysis methods and decision optimization models which provide methods and tools of interdisciplinary study for scientific and technological innovation of new liberal arts.

School leaders Cheng Jinhua, Tang Huiming, Lai Xulong, Wang Hua, Wang Linqing, Liu Jie, Liu Yongsheng and Zhou Aiguo also listened to the graduate classes. After the class, they suggested that the connection among courses in different training stages should be strengthened. Teachers should not only make the graduate courses more systematic and advanced, but also adopt flexible and effective approaches as well as innovative teaching methods to inspire graduate students’ learning enthusiasm and cultivate their scientific thinking ability. In addition, teachers should strive to explore the elements and functions of ideological and political education carried in different professional courses, encourage students to participate in the class teaching reform and innovative practice, integrate value orientation with teaching practice and pay more attention to students’ experience and feelings in class.

It is hoped that all schools and departments can promote the class teaching reform focusing on the curriculum-based political and virtuous awareness. Teachers should look at the teaching from a higher level of perspective to infect students with their personal charisma, improve students’ feelings and experience in class, help them to establish a right outlook on life and values, and therefore nurture the young people who can develop themselves in an all-round way from moral, intellectual, physical, and aesthetical grounding, and are well-prepared to join the socialist cause.

In the first week, teachers were fully prepared and full of passion while students were concentrated and active in the class. With diligent students who are eager to learn and enlightened teachers who are dedicated to teaching, the campus presents a positive academic atmosphere as well as a good teaching atmosphere. Besides the in-class teaching, online teaching has also been well prepared and arranged, with two online teaching platforms running well. Both teachers and students embrace the new semester with passion and a new attitude.

Xu Fengyi, a student from School of Public Administration, was suspended from returning to school due to the impact of the pandemic. He expresses his thanks to the school and teachers for their careful preparation of live steaming. The online teaching effect is good. The teachers’ voice is clear and the picture is smooth. He can watch the playback on the online platform, through which he can figure out the difficult points and concepts. He said, “The teachers give me one-on-one guidance and ensure that I can keep up with the teaching progress. Although the pandemic stops me from returning to the campus, our school provides me with love and help. I am looking forward to returning to my school as soon as possible.”

Mr. Tao Yingfa, supervisor of graduate education quality, said that in the first week, all teachers attended the classes on schedule and students were satisfied with the teachers’ teaching attitude, content, methods as well as the effect. As a teaching quality supervisor, Tao Yingfa promised that he will not only strengthen the quality supervision and inspection of all links in the graduate training process, but also summarize and refine his rich teaching experience and give full play to his role.

Creating CUG educational ethos and academic atmosphere is a systematic project as well as the important guarantee for high-level talent cultivation. Hence, all schools and departments should take it as their primary work, further conclude experience, consolidate achievements, strengthen curriculum construction, facilitate class management, improve teaching efficiency, and strive to enhance the student’s ability to become an autonomous learner with an independent mind, thus laying a solid foundation for further upgrading CUG’s education and talent training quality.
