CUG Hosts the 2020 Graduate Tutor Training Seminar

To fully implement the educational policies and the guiding principles of National Conference for Graduate Education, CUG held the 2020 graduate tutor training in Nanwangshan campus on November 13. More than 100 newly recruited graduate tutors in 2020 exchanged their opinions on the moral education and interpretation of graduate education policies. Vice President, also the Dean of Graduate School, Professor Lai Xulong, Executive Vice Dean of Graduate School, Professor Zhang Hongfei, Professor Zhao Laishi, Professor Ning Fulong, Professor Zhou Ke from Huazhong University of Science and Technology attended the meeting.


Professor Lai Xulong stressed that graduate tutors should provide their students with guidance both in academy and life, since they are supposed to be in charge of their students’ development. He hoped that all graduate tutors would fully understand the revised graduate education policy through this training. In addition, they should constantly make self-improvement in their tutoring orientation and academic fields with clear education mission in mind. He believed that the tutors would be able to make contributions to cultivating more high-level talents during CUG’s endeavor of building a world-renowned research university in Earth Sciences.


Professor Zhou Ke delivered a speech entitled “Reflection and Practice on Graduate Education --- Take Research on AI for Storage as an Example” and shared his thoughts and experience on graduate education. He said that graduate tutors should focus on developing students’ habits of active learning and encourage students to apply theories into practice. He called for greater efforts to develop innovative research and high-level scientific achievements by working on practical problems.

Professor Zhao Laishi delivered a speech entitled “How to Be a Qualified Doctoral Graduate Tutor”. It includes three parts: the responsibility of a graduate tutor, requirements as a doctoral graduate and the practical effect of graduate education. Professor Zhao said that a doctoral graduate tutor should set an example with rigorous academic attitude and train their students in their abilities in research, expression and management. Also, he suggested that graduate tutors provide students with an international and cooperative research platform.
  Professor Ning Fulong gave a clear explanation of academic norms in his report entitled “Academic Morality, Norms and Ethics”. He said that all graduate tutors should commit themselves to self-discipline and strictly abide by the baseline of academic morality and norms. He called for efforts to create a clean and innovative academic environment.

Professor Zhang Hongfei conveyed the guiding principles of National Conference for Graduate Education and the requirements of Ministry of Education and our university. He emphasized that the priority task for graduate tutors is to foster integrity of their students. To become qualified graduate tutors, they should be clear with all the national and school regulations and procedures of graduate education.

The training clarified the requirements for the new graduate tutors and helped them with their awareness of taking primary responsibility for their students. The new tutors learned about the regulations, requirements and procedures for them to improve the graduate education in our university.
