(Correspondent Miao Qi, Zhang Xiang and Wang Lei; Photographer Wang Siyun) In the afternoon of May 9, the meeting on advancing application for doctoral degree-conferring authorities was held online and offline at the same time. Lai Xulong, vice president of CUG, together with leaders of Graduate School, leaders in charge of degree-conferring programs and academic leaders of the discipline joined the discussion hosted by Wang Lizhe, executive vice dean of Graduate School.
Wang suggested the entities that are going to apply for degree-conferring authorities should highlight the integration of discipline development with the application. Moreover, persons in charge should specify the ultimate goal, details and measures of the discipline development, and make a proper plan so as to be well prepared for the review meeting. He promised that as a coordinator, a mediator and an administrator, Graduate School, along with relevant departments of CUG, would be supportive and work hard to improve and advance the application for doctoral degree-conferring authorities.
Leaders in charge of applying degree-conferring authorities gave an account of the current status, progress and problems of developing disciplines.
After that, Lai addressed his endorsement of the tremendous amounts of work done by degree-conferring entities. He pointed out that the development of degree-conferring entities is of great significance to improve CUG’s core competitiveness, professional training and scientific research. He also put forward three requirements for the next move: The first is to know the current situation, coordinate resources, and develop CUG to its full potential through the application. The second is to set up a precise plan and have it implemented with a joint effort, and to always adhere to the basic guiding principle of applying doctoral degree-conferring authorities. The third is to give full play to the role of the “Development of Doctoral Degree-Conferring Entities”. Besides promoting oneself from within, each entity should also address all weaknesses and pursue improvement by asking peer experts and academic leaders of the discipline for opinions, hence laying a solid foundation to apply for degree-conferring authorities.
